“So, what types of books do you like?”

Noel sat across from a woman named Grace Takahashi a few days later on a date. They met via the app Maxine had her download and had been talking for the past few weeks via text. She was very friendly and even more beautiful in person. Her deep brown almond-shaped eyes were framed by long thick eyelashes. Her hair was thick as well and jet black, it cascaded down her back in waves. Despite all of this it was her smile that made Noel click on her profile. Something about it was engaging and bright, and made her feel at home.

“I read a bit of everything because part of my job is knowing what’s out and popular. But I am partial to nonfiction historical books and mystery.” Noel tried not to stare too hard into Grace’s mesmerizing eyes. “What about you?”

“I love a good mystery as well although I’ll admit my tastes aren’t exactly of the literary variety. Dan Brown and James Patterson suit me fine.”

Noel laughed. “It’s okay, there’s a reason they are best sellers. Their writing is concise and engaging. What else do you like to do? I think I remember reading that you played basketball overseas?”

“Yes, I was a forward for a team in China. I played throughout high school and college and when I graduated the opportunity to play opened up there. Women’s basketball here doesn’t pay as much and it was an opportunity to travel. I don’t regret it one bit.”

Noel noticed her height and athletic build when she first saw her picture. She was slim but muscular and clearly stayed in shape. As she tried to conspicuously check her out again, her message app on her phone went off. Leilani’s name popped up and she put the phone on silent.

“So you’ve never dated women before? What made you decide to start?” Grace asked as she cut into her chicken.

“I’ve always known I was attracted to women. I just never allowed myself to acknowledge it. It was easier to be with men since I was attracted to them as well. This last relationship made me realize that I was closing off an opportunity to really find someone I could be happy with.”

“That’s great that you finally realized that for yourself. I came out fairly young at 14 so it’s been a long and bumpy road but I love women. Never been with a guy in that way but I know plenty of women who either discovered they liked both or who wanted to at least try it with a man to be sure they didn’t like it. Society puts a lot of pressure on us to fit ourselves into a box.”

“For sure and even though I come from a fairly open family there were messages over the years that helped dictate my choice. It’s taken reprogramming my mind to get me to this place.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re here now,” Grace said with a smile.

Noel smiled back and replied in kind.
